Laparoscopic Surgery in Delhi – Everything You Need to Know

Dedicated to empowering women through compassionate healthcare and expert medical guidance.

When it comes to gynecological surgeries, the shift from traditional open surgery to minimally invasive techniques has revolutionized patient care. Laparoscopic surgery, often called keyhole surgery, has become the gold standard for many gynecological conditions.

Dr. Deepika Singh, an FCLS-certified laparoscopic surgeon practicing in South Delhi, brings years of advanced training to perform these delicate procedures. This guide breaks down what laparoscopic surgery is, its benefits, and what patients can expect.

What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopy is a surgical technique that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. Instead, the surgeon makes a few small cuts (usually 0.5 to 1 cm long). A thin tube equipped with a tiny camera and light source (the laparoscope) is inserted through one incision, transmitting high-resolution images to a monitor. Specialized surgical instruments are inserted through the other small incisions to perform the operation.

Types of Gynecological Laparoscopic Procedures

Many conditions that previously required open surgery can now be treated laparoscopically. Dr. Deepika Singh routinely performs:

  • Ovarian Cystectomy: Removal of cysts from the ovaries while preserving healthy ovarian tissue.
  • Myomectomy: Removal of uterine fibroids.
  • Hysterectomy: Complete or partial removal of the uterus.
  • Endometriosis Treatment: Excision or ablation of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy Treatment: Safe removal of a pregnancy growing outside the uterus.
  • Diagnostic Laparoscopy: Used to investigate causes of chronic pelvic pain or infertility when other tests are inconclusive.

Benefits of Laparoscopy vs. Open Surgery

The advantages of keyhole surgery for the patient are substantial:

Feature Laparoscopic Surgery Open Surgery
Incision Size Tiny (0.5 - 1 cm) Large (10 - 15 cm)
Hospital Stay Same day or 1 night 3 to 5 nights
Recovery Time 1 to 2 weeks 4 to 6 weeks
Scarring Minimal to invisible Significant visible scar
Post-operative Pain Significantly less Higher, requiring more pain meds

What to Expect – Before, During, and After

Before: You will undergo routine pre-operative tests (blood tests, ECG). You will be asked to fast for 8-12 hours prior to the surgery.

During: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, so you will be completely asleep. The abdomen is gently inflated with carbon dioxide gas to create space for the surgeon to work and see clearly.

After: You will wake up in the recovery room. It is normal to feel some shoulder pain for a day or two; this is caused by the carbon dioxide gas irritating the diaphragm. You'll likely be walking the same day and discharged within 24 hours.

Who Needs Laparoscopic Surgery?

Not every condition requires surgery, and not all surgeries can be done laparoscopically. However, if you have been diagnosed with symptomatic fibroids, persistent ovarian cysts, severe endometriosis, or if you require a hysterectomy, laparoscopic surgery is often the safest and most effective option.
